Hockey wins

This weekend the Nanook hockey team won the UAA Kendall Hockey Classic, beating the Northeastern Huskies 3-2 in a shootout, and the University of Connecticut Huskies 5-0.

Friday’s victory over Northeastern, though it counts in the NCAA standings as a tie, brought goals from the Knelsen brothers. Junior Brandon scored two goals, with assists from younger brother Dion, while Dion put in the only puck in the shootout.

Saturday’s game against Connecticut found more than the Knelsen brothers scoring, as five different players put the Nanooks on the board for a 5-0 victory. Ryan Hohl, Braden Walls, Dustin Sather, Adam Naglich and Cody Rymut all added tallies.

Freshman goaltender Scott Greenham blocked 13 shots and became the second goaltender in Nanook history to record a shutout in his first start. The only other goalie to do so was Wylie Rogers, who graduated last year.

Runners hit Hawaii

The cross-country team escaped the snow this weekend and traveled to Hawaii Pacific University, where the women finished fourth of seven teams and the men finished fifth of six teams.

For the women, freshman Theresia Schnurr was the top finisher in fifth place. Sisters Julia Pierson and Anna Coulter also finished in the top 20, with 12th- and 17th-place finishes, respectively. Elisabeth Habermann and Jana Benedix rounded out the top five runners.

For the men, Ray Sabo was the top Nanook in 15th place. Mitch Chandler finished at 20th. Einar Often, Chris Eversman and Matt Scerbak rounded out the top five men for Alaska.
