About

The Sun Star is the student-run newspaper of the University of Alaska Fairbanks.  The Sun Star came into being as the result of a merger between the two former UAF newspapers – The Northern Sun, a newspaper produced by the journalism department, and the Polar Star, an independently-run student newspaper.

In the modern day, the Sun Star is staffed and produced entirely by students.  This is not to say that we don’t have help, usually in the form of constructive criticism, from the journalism faculty and others.  The Sun Star’s faculty advisor is Lynne Lott, an assistant professor in the UAF Journalism Department.

The Sun Star is funded both by ad revenue and by a share of student fees – seven percent of every student’s $35/semester ASUAF fee goes to fund the publication of the paper.  So if you’re a student, thank you for your $2.45 contribution this semester, and please let us know if you think we’re using it poorly (or, for that matter, using it well).
