No prizes, no fans, no sponsors, just the excitement of getting together with friends for a race in the frigid Fairbanks January.  On Jan. 26, runners gathered across from the Patty Center in the morning to run 6.5 miles in the freezing cold. This race isn’t for the faint of heart, but then again, it closely follows suit with its name: the Chilly Buns Mid-Winter Run.

The Running Club North, a non-profit organization focused on keeping individuals active even in the heart of winter, hosts the annual run.  By 10 a.m., 19 runners were in attendance and waiting for directions from Jane LeBlond, the organizer of the event.  LeBlond gave the signal to start and the runners were off to not only face the 6.5 mile course but also the minus 42 degree temperatures.

The participants started out heading north on Sheep Creek, made a right on Miller Hill, ran past the musk oxen of the Large Animal Research Station and came back to the Patty Center to finish off the course.  Graduate student and former Nanook Rifle team member Partrick Sartz finished in first place, in just under 46 minutes.

This is one of the coldest runs in North America, where competitors come together simply to enjoy the run. This is the Chilly Buns Mid-Winter Run.
