The U.S. Arctic Research Commission met at UAF Oct. 5-8. The meeting included presentations about current arctic research projects. The commission conducts public hearings in Alaska to receive public input on current and proposed arctic research projects. Currently, the research commission is urging a new federal emphasis on integrated Arctic Ocean research, renewed programs related to the prevention of and response to oil spills in ice-covered waters, and to strengthen arctic health and indigenous language research.
Founded in 1984 by the Arctic Research and Policy Act, the commission works to establish policy, promote research, guide the Interagency Arctic Research Policy Committee and interact with arctic residents.
