Career Services helps students with upcoming energy fair

For incoming engineering students, finding a job in the current market may be a daunting task, but UAF Career Services along with British Petroleum is going to try and help out.

From Tuesday to Thursday, Career Services will host the “Careers in Energy Fair” in the Wood Center with  the goal of helping students get jobs in oil and gas after college. Organizations including Arctic Slope Regional Corporation, Baker Hughes, Cameron International and BP will be looking for students with majors from physics and geology to mathematics and engineering to fill full time and part time jobs and internships.

“Most engineering companys like to see you’ve had an internship, but what it helps you do is get a job because that’s what their actually interviewing for,” said Patti Picha, Director of Career Services. “We have several students who are working here at UAF who have already been hired by an oil and gas company who are going to finish their senior year and go right to work for. It’s great to go through your senior year knowing you’ll have a job.”

On Tuesday, Tesoro kicks off the fair with an event at Spring Hill Suites at 6:30 p.m. for energy and petroleum. Tesoro will be looking for full time workers along with interns in several different fields. 

On Wednesday, Schlumberger, the world’s largest oilfield services company, will be looking for student intern at the Wood Center at 1 p.m.

At 3 p.m., Baker Hughes, another leader in oilfield services will be at the Wood Center looking for interns and full time employees. Finally on  Thursday at 5:30 p.m., Conoco Phillips is filling full time and internship positions for students of all class standings.

Several other companies  will be looking for employees during the week as well.  There are no set times, but updated times can be found at uaf.edu/career.

“For BP Alaska in particular, we have had just wonderful success with our students. We have many students who are alums who work for BP,” said Picka.

Up next for UAF Career Services for the fall  semester is Accounting Recruitment from Sept. 30-Oct. 11; Natural Resources, Fisheries and Sciences Job fair on Oct. 24; and the fall Job and Internship Fair on Nov. 13.
