Matt and Kim are an indie pop couple band, who starting performing together in 2004. Matt performs the vocals, while Kim plays the drums. The band performed Saturday night, Sept. 28 to a crowd of more than 1,300 people. The event was hosted by Concert Board and started at 8 p.m.
Sun Star: Can you guys tell me how you two met at the Pratt Institute?
Kim Schifino: I saw Matt and I said I’m going to f*** the sh** out of that dude. And I hollered at him. And then we started dating.
Matt Johnson: We’re starting this off very real. That’s the short answer. Yep. She laid the moves on me.
How does your latest album “Lightning” compare to your other albums?
MJ: I feel that all our albums come off of what we’ve learned from the one previous to them. These are the only few albums I’ve ever made in my life and every time I learn new stuff or make mistakes or whatever. So I think “Lightning” is an accumulation of everything we’ve done so far.
What has been the coolest thing you’ve experienced here that was quintessential “Alaska?”
MJ: For me, I had never been up in a two-seater airplane before and flying over through the hills and mountains. The kid who brought us up told me when we landed that he just got his pilot’s license a few days ago.
KS: That was a little terrifying!
MJ: Yeah, but it was certainly an experience I’ll remember for a long time.
Can you guys talk about some of the collaborations you’ve done with other musicians?
KS: The one we’ve only really done is with Soulja Boy and Andrew W.K.. Converse used to do “Three Artists, One song” project and we were able to write one song and pick who we wanted to work with.
MJ: They asked us, who would we like to do this and we were just trying to think of people who were different from us but also loved to party. Andrew W.K. and Soulja Boy fell in as good party jams. It was great! We very rarely, as we’ve said, collaborate but we hope to do more in the future.
The music video you guys shot for “I’m a Goner,” looked pretty wild. What was it like shooting with Soulja Boy and Andrew W.K.?
KS: That was in that abandoned hospital!
MJ: Yeah, it had been a hospital in New Jersey that was closed but they rented the space to shoot in. Just walking around, there were gurneys and other medical equipment still left behind. Really creepy.
KS: It was kind of one of those things where we were shooting in one area, and they’re like “Oh! The bathroom’s down at the other end” and I’m like “I’m not f**king walking down there! Somebody’s coming with me!” *laughs*
Kim, I’ve heard you triple-tie your shoelaces. Is this true?
KS: I haven’t done it yet for tonight but yeah, people try to steal my sneakers!
MJ: She does a bit where she walks out on the audience’s hands and they just want to take a piece of her with them.
KS: They don’t know that if I don’t have sneakers on, I can’t play. I guess I usually triple them up a lot of the time. There’s nothing worse than having to stop and retie a shoe.
Where do you guys see yourselves in the next year?
KS: We keep touring until right before Thanksgiving, then we’ll take a break. We’ve been going pretty hard since this past February.
MJ: We’ve been on the road a lot, and we love playing shows. But we also really like making music, and we haven’t made much music in the past year so hopefully starting around December, we’re going to just start on new tunes and be home for a little bit sitting by our imaginary fireplace.
You guys probably get asked this a lot, but do you two ever get sick of each other?
MJ: Somehow on paper, we should have killed each other long ago just because we spend every waking second of every day together. But for whatever reason, that’s not the case with us. I feel very lucky. I wouldn’t suggest touring nine months of the year with your significant other for every couple, but for us, through some miracle it works out.
