Pell Grant Scholarships have reached an all-time high of $5,550 under the Democratic Congress and are expected to reach $5,975 by 2017, according to the Committee on Education and Labor. The Student Aid and Fiscal Responsibility Act was passed as a part of the health care reform legislation and overhauled the student loan program. The savings from that bill were reinvested in scholarships to help make college more affordable. A key component of the new law links the Pell Grant to the Consumer Price Index in 2013 to ensure the grants increase with the cost of living.
Financial aid advisors and students at UAF saw a $250 increase in the grants from last year, according to Jackie Alleyne-McCants, the Associate Director of Financial Aid.
