Sun Star Picks, Feb. 2-8

Tuesday, February 2

Those of you who are hella hardcore about fitness might want to head to the Student Recreation Center at 5:30 p.m. for HIIT, or “High Intensity Interval Training.” It’s free for students or anyone else with a membership, and will evidently work you to the “point beyond where your body wants to quit.” Yikes. If you are not hardcore but still into fitness and can swim, I recommend heading to the Patty pool anytime between 9 a.m. and 1:30 p.m and swimming a few laps. Also the locker rooms have a sauna! -Molly Putman / Layout Editor

The UAF Frozen Lenses Photography Club meets from 1-2 p.m. in room 106 in the Bunnell Building. The club is really active and has all kinds of fun demos, interesting discussion topics and cool trips planned for the semester at hand. If you’re into photography and wanting to get involved with a community of photographers to learn from and grow with then this is the group for you. We look forward to seeing you there! –Sarah ManriquezPhoto Editor

Thursday, February 4

What do you have going on this Thursday evening? Well, whatever it is, you should get your groove on in the Wood Center instead, because there will be free dancing and dance lessons! Come join Latin Dance Club and learn not just Latin dances. Latin Dance Club meets every Thursday at 7 p.m. downstairs in the Wood Center between the bowling alley and the pub. And if you’re not ready to get jiggy, you can always stop by the pub, too (if you’re 21+). –Lida Zakurdaew / Distribution Manager

Friday, February 5

Pride Night with DJ Pika is taking over The Pub at 9 p.m. Friday. Costumes are encouraged, and the event’s theme seems to fall somewhere between “Gay Pride” and “Valentine’s Day.” Frankly, though I like those ideas, neither really resonate with me specifically. Then again, we know that there’s beer at The Pub, and the event promises dance music and go-go dancers. Those items sound like something I’d be much more likely to check out, as I frequently crave alcohol, rhythmic flailing and flesh—often at the same time. -Spencer Tordoff / Web Editor

Saturday, February 6

Have you ever felt the cold grip of someone else rooting around in your head?  Would you like to?  Hypnotist and mentalist, Sean Bott, is coming to Hess Rec from 9-10:30 p.m.  Of course, if you’re more like me and less likely to volunteer in any large social gathering where someone is professing the ability to look inside your brain, it would still be an interesting event to observe.  You might be witness to some interesting feats. -Kyrie Long / Copy Editor

Sunday, February 7

It has finally come upon us. It’s Super Bowl Sunday, pinning the Carolina Panthers and the Denver Broncos. Get excited for the final game of the NFL season in what should be spectacle to behold at 2:30 p.m. in Hess Rec Center. Could this be Broncos’ quarterback Peyton Manning last run? Will Cam Newton lead the Panthers to their first Super Bowl win? Find out on Sunday. -Aaron Walling / Advertising Manager

Monday, February 8

<snark>Oh, was the Super Bowl yesterday?  I hadn’t noticed…</snark>  If the amount of sunshine we Alaskans experience increases, you might find yourself feeling more energetic and looking for something active to do.  Try to break free while it’s bright out and go for a ski in the lovely weather – the weatherman says it’s supposed to be warm all week!

If the mid-teens isn’t quite warm enough for you, perhaps you could take up swing dancing.  Beginning lessons are being held at Jazzercise Fitness Center 7-8 p.m.  Students can purchase five classes for $30, which is half off the full price for adults.  I might try to talk my honey into this one -Danny Fisher / Editor-in-Chief
