If you have two thumbs and an attention span, the UAF Film Club invites you to be a critic at the 2010 Film Festival, Saturday Dec. 11. Your tomatoes will be best left at home to rot, as this is sure to be a quality performance!

At 7 p.m. the UAF Film Club will roll out the red carpet at the Salisbury Theater to give amateur filmmakers from Fairbanks and across Alaska the celebrity treatment they deserve. This year, the Club is really “pulling out all the stops,” said UAF Film Club President Kalesha Pearson, with what will be the Club’s first-ever formal red carpet event.

Submissions from all genres were accepted through Dec. 6, and six films were selected for showing. Often zany, curious and visionary, the films collected for the Film Festival reflect the diversity of interests of people with cameras. According to Club board member Lorien Nettleton, participants are “limited only by time and energy.” Anyone with an interest in sharing a story is encouraged to do so in front of or behind a camera.

This year, awards will be “viewer’s choice” for overall excellence and originality, and they will be formally presented at the gala immediately following the showing. This alcohol-free event plans to be a prime opportunity for film-goers to eat, drink and spark conversation with the night’s VIP film-makers.

Since 1992, the UAF Film Club has hosted at least one major film festival on campus each academic year. Previous years’ highlights include a stop-motion film of a monster attacking a city, a cautionary tale about accidentally summoning an angry Chuck Norris and an eleven-minute experimental film juxtaposing provoking images such as eyes, eggs, and shower drains.

UAF Film Club is a student organization, dedicated to rewarding creative expression and excellence in the mediums of film, movie making and film production. The organization’s mission is to continue expanding the vast range of film-making opportunities at the University of Alaska Fairbanks. UAF Film Club meetings are held every Thursday from 1:05-1:50 p.m. in the theater department Greenroom. Checkout the Film Club website and stay tuned to everything film in Fairbanks!
