ASUAF October 1st Update
By Aaron Thomas
For their first October meeting, the Associated Students of the University of Alaska Fairbanks senate met to discuss a variety of topics including funding for student travel, Friendsgiving at the honors house, supporting athletics at West Valley High School, advocating for student mental health, and increasing accessibility for the deaf community at UAF.
Representatives from the National Alliance on Mental Illness spoke about increasing awareness for student struggles with mental health. The senate assisted them in finding a faculty mentor and the resources they needed to help start student-led initiatives and support groups on campus to help students struggling with mental illness.
The senate also addressed the issue of irresponsible underage drinking among UAF students in a collaboration with the Office of Rights, Compliance and Accountability. The senators brainstormed various means to help encourage responsible drinking practices and planning events that provide sober opportunities for students to have fun on campus.
Several students seeking funding for travel for research projects submitted their proposal for senate approval.
The senate meeting concluded with a discussion on fundraising opportunities for ASUAF.
ASUAF meets every Wednesday and students are welcome to join and voice concerns to the members of the senate. For students not attending in-person, zoom links are available www.uaf.edu/asuaf/meetings.
