The UAF Student Athletic Advisory Committee (SAAC) spent Halloween giving back to the local community by volunteering at the annual Rink or Treat event at Polar Ice.
“The holidays are a great opportunity for our student-athletes to give back to the community that supports us so much,” said UAF SAAC president, Anna Nevison.
SAAC is made up of student-athlete representatives from each UAF Nanooks sports team. The committee works to give student-athletes a voice within the athletics department while creating opportunities to serve the local community.
“Our goal is to give Nanook student-athletes a voice in our department as well as to give back through service opportunities,” Nevison said.
Rink or Treat ran from 4 to 8 p.m. featuring two main events : a lights-on, kid-friendly rink-or-treat and skate, followed by a lights-off, spookier rink-or-treat and skate for older children and adults.
Community clubs and organizations hosted tables in the entrance area of Polar Ice, handing out candy, flyers and information.
In addition to candy, SAAC handed out schedules from UAF athletics programs, hoping to draw in fans to upcoming events and encourage members of the community to support the ‘Nooks throughout their season.
For SAAC, the Rink or Treat event was an opportunity to connect with next generation of sports fans and represent Nanook athletics in the community.
“We love to see young Nanooks and are proud to represent such a great department at community events like this one,” Nevison said.
