UAF Student Workers Will March for Unionization on Campus
On Friday, March 31st, University of Alaska graduate student workers will march on campus to continue their campaign for a union. After filing a petition to form a union with the Alaska Labor Relations Agency, they are expressing their continued support for unionization and to proceed rapidly to a union election so they can confirm their choice to collectively bargain. Press is welcome to attend.
“We are coming together to show that there is incredible support for our union, and we are excited to demonstrate that support in a union election as soon as possible. As graduate workers we make important contributions to the university’s research, service and teaching missions and serve the Alaska community. It’s in everyone’s best interest that we move through the certification process quickly so we start bargaining for a contract that will help improve the institution,” said KJ Janeschek, Graduate Teaching Assistant in English.

The Alaskan Graduate Workers Association-UAW (AGWA-UAW) would represent over 550 employees statewide at the University of Alaska. They are the first student worker group in Alaska to file for union recognition. The University of Alaska is currently the only public R1 or R2 University on the U.S. west coast where student employees do not have a union.
The UAW represents 100,000 higher education workers across the US, including more academic student employees and more postdoctoral scholars than any other union.
