October ASUAF recap
By Aaron Thomas
October 8:
On October 8, the Associated Students of the University of Alaska Fairbanks Senate met for their weekly meeting where they presented several pieces of legislation and listened to Alyssa Enriquez present a travel funding request to attend the Professional and Organization Development Conference in San Diego, California.
Funding was requested to pay for ASUAF’s collaboration with the honors college to build a starvation gulch structure this year as well as food and thank you baskets for those who helped with construction.
A motion to host a club fair on campus was passed with possible dates still being considered.
A resolution of protest was presented to help raise awareness for the cancellation of Title III funding for the Alaskan Native slash Native Hawaiian Program, which the senate approved at the meeting's conclusion.
October 15:
On October 15 the Associated Students of the University of Alaska Fairbanks Senate met for their weekly meeting where they listened to a variety of clubs presenting funding requests including the UAF Warhammer 40k Club, The Physics Graduate Student Association, The University of Alaska Fairbanks Wildlife Society Chapter, The ACS Chemistry Club, The UAF Music Collective, and The Festival of Native Arts.
The senate additionally heard legislation to plan a “Flash Freeze Dance” in December, heard a travel funding request for Tegan Silva, and appointment of two senators, Lilly Varney and Mack Benn, to attend an Organization of Student Social Workers meeting. Siva was not there in person so the senators discussing it declined to read the request on the record.
October 22:
For their meeting on October 22, ASUAF discussed implementing American Sign Language translators across campus and at the Career Technical College as part of a broader initiative to incorporate ASL accessibility across UAF.
The Rules Committee chair Glackin spoke with the senate about their recent consideration of the presidential appointment of Lily Barney and Matt Fenn on the committee.
A bill was introduced to help recognize high-performing part-time students on the Dean's List, Chancellor's List, and in the Office of Academic Affairs. This bill would allow part-time students that meet a course load and academic requirement to be recognized for their academic achievements alongside full-time students.
The senate also discussed funding for a Flash-Freeze dance in December, continuing the discussion from the previous meeting.
President Nelson officially appointed Jacob Fithen as an ASUAF Senator. Fithen seeks to establish an EdRising collegiate chapter at UAF in a collaboration with the school of Education to help advance educational skills for aspiring teachers.
ASUAF meets every Wednesday and students are welcome to join and voice concerns to the members of the senate. For students not attending in-person, zoom links are available at www.uaf.edu/asuaf/meetings.
