On Monday Oct. 13, UAF celebrated Indigenous Peoples’ Day honoring Native culture through song, story, games, and community.

The Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies program, or WGSS, at UAF has doubled enrollment numbers since last year under the leadership of political science professor Carol Gray.

Wednesday’s event at Solstice Books hosted three local authors who discussed their books that focused on the Indigenous communities, and the stories and histories within them. Authors Leasi Vanessa Lee Raymond, Anamaq Margaret Rudolf, and Ch’igiioonta’ She Holds a Child all came with important messages about their works.

This year’s game of Humans versus Zombies bewildered campus last week and gave people a lot to talk about with the array of students walking around with strange orange ribbons and nerf guns.

On August 26 this year’s recipients of the Peter Mackeith Grant presented their expedition to the Stikine Icecap. The team consisted of Torin Hooge, Simeon Ramirez, Hazel Probst and Leo Nordman.  The team set out to climb three major peaks in the area: Kate’s Needle, Castle Mountain, and Mount Pratt. 

The International Chamber Music Alaska, or ICMA, Summer Intensive was held from August 11-16, filling the Davis Concert Hall with the sounds of live chamber music.

On July 29 at the Experiment Farm, UAF’s Agricultural Institute hosted a field day for the farmers, researchers, and gardeners of the Interior. Bagpipes, kilts and cheers filled the air Saturday, Aug. 9, as the Alaska Dog Mushers Association field on Farmers Loop Road hosted the inaugural Midnight Sun Scottish Highland Games.
