The Associate Students of the University of Alaska Fairbanks senate met for their first November weekly meeting to discuss a variety of topics on their docket, including some guest speakers and several travel fund requests.

The University of Alaska Fairbanks English department hosted a Dead Poets public reading in a collaboration with SoBear lounge at the Hess Auditorium on October 30. 

Halloween night was busy, full of plenty of spooktacular events for all to attend. One new event was a laidback live show hosted by the UAF Tabletop Roleplaying Games Club.

For ASUAF’s meeting on October 29, they discussed a variety of campus issues, swore in Jacob Fithen as a senator, read legislation concerning ASUAF’s involvement in campus events such as the United Ways Chili Cook Off, and discussed travel funding for Teegan Silva.

With birch bark, flowers, mushrooms and even a burbot head in hand, students and the public gathered at the University of Alaska Fairbanks ceramics studio to watch and learn from an acclaimed professional. Visiting artist Dawn Holder gave ceramics demonstrations for two days, teaching students how to take these fragile objects and preserve their memory in clay. Holder is currently an associate professor at the Herron School of Art in Indianapolis, Illinois; her art is exhibited across the world.

More than 50 artists from 16 countries invite audiences to explore the boundaries between comfort and unease in “dis/comfort in the North,” a new exhibition curated by University of Alaska Fairbanks master’s student Katie Ione Craney.

On Monday Oct. 13, UAF celebrated Indigenous Peoples’ Day honoring Native culture through song, story, games, and community.

The thesis exhibition, Echoes of Memories by Sydney Priest opened on Monday, Oct. 6, in the Fine Arts Complex and invites visitors into a personal and emotional visual story that explores memory, loss, and healing.

Patti Picha was born in Puyallup, Washington to Warren and Jean (Grimme) Picha in 1954, the youngest of four children raised on the family berry/rhubarb farm near Puyallup.

The Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies program, or WGSS, at UAF has doubled enrollment numbers since last year under the leadership of political science professor Carol Gray.

For their first October meeting, the Associated Students of the University of Alaska Fairbanks senate met to discuss a variety of topics including funding for student travel, Friendsgiving at the honors house, supporting athletics at West Valley High School, advocating for student mental health, and increasing accessibility for the deaf community at UAF. 

Capping off a busy month of discussions and decisions, the Associated Students of the University of Alaska Fairbanks senate addressed a wide range of student concerns throughout September that includes accessibility, residence life, rural outreach, mental health services, dining, and student funding.

Wednesday’s event at Solstice Books hosted three local authors who discussed their books that focused on the Indigenous communities, and the stories and histories within them. Authors Leasi Vanessa Lee Raymond, Anamaq Margaret Rudolf, and Ch’igiioonta’ She Holds a Child all came with important messages about their works.

This year’s game of Humans versus Zombies bewildered campus last week and gave people a lot to talk about with the array of students walking around with strange orange ribbons and nerf guns.

The Associated Students of the University of Alaska Fairbanks, or ASUAF, convened for its weekly meeting Wednesday evening, Sept. 17, passing multiple funding bills, confirming two new senators, and preparing for several key campus initiatives.

At its weekly meeting on Sept. 10, the ASUAF Senate focused on several issues impacting students, from campus dining and study spaces to travel funding and course evaluations.
